Alibaba Unveils AI Apex with Qwen 3.8-Max
Chinese technology giant Alibaba has unveiled Qwen 3.8-Max, the largest and most powerful artificial intelligence (AI) model in the company's history. The launch comes shortly after domestic rival Moonshot AI introduced its Kimi K3 model, intensifying competition within China's rapidly evolving AI sector and drawing fresh attention from the global technology community.
Chinese technology companies have been aggressively advancing the development of open-weight AI models, aiming to deliver internationally competitive AI capabilities at lower costs. Alibaba's latest release further strengthens China's position in the global race for advanced artificial intelligence.
Among the World's Leading AI Models
Qwen 3.8-Max is built with 2.4 trillion parameters, making it one of the largest AI models ever developed.
According to the latest rankings published by the AI benchmarking platform Arena.ai, the model has become the highest-ranked Chinese-developed AI system for text analysis.
Globally, however, it trails only Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Claude Opus models. In image and visual content analysis, Qwen 3.8-Max ranks second worldwide, surpassed only by one version of Claude Fable 5.
Advanced Capabilities and Efficient Architecture
The new model is capable of simultaneously processing text, images, and video while supporting context windows of up to one million tokens in a single prompt.
This enables it to analyze massive software codebases, lengthy legal documents, or hundreds of pages of technical material in one session before generating comprehensive solutions.
To maximize both speed and cost efficiency, Alibaba has adopted a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture. Rather than activating the entire model for every request, only the specialized components relevant to a given task are engaged. As a result, although the model contains 2.4 trillion parameters, only about 95 billion parameters are activated for each inference, significantly reducing computational requirements.
Alibaba also stated that Qwen 3.8-Max successfully completed a complex software engineering project in just 16 days, demonstrating its advanced coding capabilities.
The company announced that the model will become available to users on the Alibaba Cloud Model Studio platform next week.
