Mars Marathon Milestone

NASA’s rover Perseverance has achieved a remarkable milestone on Mars, completing the equivalent of a full marathon distance after five years of exploration on the Red Planet. The robotic explorer has now traveled 26.2 miles (approximately 42.16 kilometers) across the harsh Martian terrain.

According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Perseverance completed the marathon-distance journey on June 14. Even under ideal conditions, the rover’s top speed is only about 0.1 miles per hour. Covering such a distance across Mars’ rocky and sandy landscape in just five years is being regarded as a major achievement in the history of space exploration.

In a post on Instagram, NASA stated, “Perseverance is only the second explorer to complete a marathon distance on the surface of another planet or moon beyond Earth. Before this, NASA’s famous rover Opportunity became the first to achieve the feat in 2015.”

However, Perseverance has significantly outpaced Opportunity in terms of speed. While Opportunity took 11 years and two months to travel the same 26.2-mile distance, Perseverance accomplished it in just five years. Meanwhile, NASA’s Curiosity rover, which has been operating on Mars since 2012, has traveled a total of nearly 23 miles so far.

NASA said the historic milestone was reached while Perseverance was exploring an ancient and scientifically intriguing region west of Jezero Crater. In this area, the rover has discovered remnants of an ancient lake and several potential signs and fossil-like traces that may indicate the possibility of past life on Mars. The robotic scientist recently also sent back a striking selfie from its ongoing western exploration campaign.
