Gmail Goes Conversational with Google’s New ‘Gmail Live’ AI Feature
Google has taken the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Gmail inbox a step further. At the tech giant’s annual developer conference, ‘Google I/O 2026,’ held in California, Google announced a new conversational AI feature for Gmail called ‘Gmail Live.’ As a result, users will no longer need to type search queries to find emails or information in their inboxes. Instead, they will be able to retrieve information simply by speaking directly to Gmail in natural language.
Google said the feature, powered by its in-house AI model ‘Gemini,’ will help users instantly locate important information hidden among hundreds of emails in their inboxes.
End of Typing: Search Through Voice Commands
Typically, users had to type different keywords into Gmail’s search box to find flight tickets, doctors’ appointment schedules, hotel booking codes, or school notices related to their children. In many cases, locating the correct information became difficult due to multiple emails on the same topic.
Gmail Product Lead Devanshi Bhandari said during a briefing, “Gmail Live will understand natural human speech. Even if you ask follow-up questions after an initial query or interrupt the conversation midway to switch topics, it will still understand accurately.”
During a live demonstration for journalists, she asked Gmail Live questions verbally about her child’s school tour and hotel room number, and the AI chatbot quickly provided the correct answers.
Google Takes a Cautious Approach Amid Criticism
At a time when AI technology is facing growing public scrutiny worldwide over massive electricity consumption and the construction of new data centers, Google showcased this practical application of AI within an everyday service like Gmail.
However, Google clarified that the new voice feature will not replace or remove Gmail’s traditional search box. Instead, it will function as an additional convenience feature. Previously, after Google forcefully introduced AI search in Google Photos, the company faced strong backlash from users and was eventually compelled to roll back the feature. Learning from that experience, Google is not making the new feature mandatory from the outset.
Who Will Get Access?
In addition to the voice-based ‘Gmail Live’ feature, several new capabilities are also being introduced, including ready-to-send drafts and instant file access.
The ‘AI Inbox’ feature, launched earlier this year, is now being expanded beyond Google AI Ultra customers to include ‘Pro’ and ‘Plus’ subscribers as well.
However, the special voice-based ‘Gmail Live’ feature will launch toward the end of next summer and, in its initial phase, will only be available to subscribers of Google’s highest premium service, ‘Google AI Ultra.’
