New Google AI Upgrade May Leave Most Android Phones Behind
Google has delivered disappointing news for millions of Android smartphone users worldwide. According to reports, users who want access to the company’s most advanced artificial intelligence features may need to buy devices released in or after 2026. Even the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S25 lineup — priced at around BDT 150,000 in some markets — is reportedly excluded from the new upgrade list.
According to Android industry experts, accessing Google’s upcoming “Gemini Intelligence” features will require extremely powerful hardware and advanced memory specifications. This means only the latest-generation devices, such as Google Pixel 10 and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S26 series, are expected to fully support the platform.
Strict Hardware Requirements
Technology portals report that the requirements for Google’s “Gemini Intelligence” platform are so demanding that even many premium flagship smartphones may not qualify. Some technology enthusiasts have jokingly compared the system to an exclusive club bouncer that refuses entry to most devices.
In addition to AI capabilities, Google’s new upgrade policy reportedly requires devices to support at least five major Android OS upgrades along with six years of continuous security patches. Analysts believe the first official rollout of these features could begin later this year through Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Security and the Future of AI
Google says the new technology has been designed with privacy and security at its core. Users will reportedly be able to enable or disable individual AI features whenever they choose, allowing the system to function more like a trusted assistant rather than an intrusive platform.
Analysts believe these powerful AI tools could fundamentally transform how people interact with smartphones. Technology publication Android Authority has even raised the question: if Gemini can independently handle searches, planning, comparisons, and conversations, what distinct role will the Android operating system itself continue to play?
A Move Against Apple?
The timing of Google’s announcement is also attracting attention. Apple is scheduled to begin its annual developer conference, WWDC 2026, on June 8. Analysts do not believe it is a coincidence that Google unveiled Gemini Intelligence roughly one month earlier.
Although Apple announced Apple Intelligence two years ago, many of its promised features have yet to be fully rolled out. Industry observers believe Google is attempting to capitalize on that delay and strengthen its position in the AI-powered smartphone market.
However, analysts note that users may ultimately need to spend significantly more money on next-generation 2026 smartphones in order to fully experience Google’s upcoming AI ecosystem.
