Michael Reclaims North American Box Office Crown as Global Earnings Cross $700 Million
Four weeks after its release, Michael has once again secured the top position at the North American box office. With this latest achievement, the film’s worldwide earnings have already surpassed $700 million, according to data from Hollywood trade publications.
Industry analysts believe the movie is now on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time.
The current record holder remains Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 biographical drama based on Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, which earned a total of $911 million globally. Given the momentum of Michael, film analysts believe breaking that record may now be only a matter of time.
Michael Overtakes The Devil Wears Prada 2
After dominating the box office for the previous two weeks, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has now been pushed to second place by Michael. During the latest weekend, Michael earned an additional $26.1 million from North American theaters.
Earlier in April, the film had already set a new opening-weekend record for a musical biopic by earning nearly $97.2 million. So far, the movie has collected approximately $280 million from North America alone and a worldwide total of $703 million.
Attention is now shifting toward the Japan market, where the film is scheduled for release in June. Analysts expect the movie could shatter previous box office records once it enters the massive Japanese market.
Other Box Office Highlights
After remaining at the top for two consecutive weeks, The Devil Wears Prada 2 — starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt — slipped to second place this weekend, earning $18 million. Its worldwide gross has now reached nearly $550 million.
The remaining titles in the weekend’s top five are:
- Third place: Obsession — $16 million
- Fourth place: Mortal Kombat 2 — $13.4 million
- Fifth place: The Ship Detectives starring Hugh Jackman — $9.3 million
