RUET Student Injured as Ceiling Fan Falls in Classroom
A student was injured after a running ceiling fan detached and fell inside a classroom of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET). The injured student has been identified as MushrakuI Alam Farhad.
The incident occurred around 11:30 am on Saturday, 28 March, during a class of the 2023–24 academic session (23 series). The student sustained injuries when a blade of the fan fell onto his neck. He was immediately given first aid with the assistance of the class teacher.
Classes at RUET resumed on the same day after a long vacation of nearly one and a half months, and the classroom equipment was being used under such conditions. However, allegations have emerged that no inspection or supervision of the equipment had been carried out during this period. It is initially suspected that the accident may have been caused by a fault in the fan’s nuts and bolts.
Following the incident, concerns have arisen among students. They have demanded regular inspection of classrooms and campus infrastructure to prevent such accidents in the future.
Regarding the matter, Head of the ECE Department, Professor Dr. Md. Anowar Hossain, stated that classroom equipment is regularly inspected and that the concerned fans had been installed recently.
He added that the incident likely occurred due to a mechanical fault. An initiative has already been undertaken to re-examine equipment in all rooms of the department.
