Google Glides Google Search with AI Mode Integration

Amid intensifying competition with OpenAI, Google has announced that it is testing the integration of AI Mode with AI Overviews in its search results. With this update, users will be able to seamlessly switch from the AI-driven summary (AI Overview) that typically appears atop search results into a conversation-based AI Mode for deeper exploration. The news comes from TechCrunch.

The conversational feature, named AI Mode, was launched in May 2025 in the United States and globally in August 2025. Powered by Google’s Gemini model, it allows users to engage in a chat-like back-and-forth with Google, similar to ChatGPT.

Previously, users had to navigate to a separate AI Mode tab to initiate conversations, deciding beforehand whether to use a standard search or dive deeper into a topic. Google now aims to test whether maintaining these experiences separately is necessary, as many users prefer to explore more deeply while performing a standard search. For now, the new seamless transition is available only for mobile users.

Meanwhile, competitor OpenAI has delayed other product updates to focus on enhancing its chatbox experience. According to Google, improvements in Gemini, including the Nano Banana image model, have increased Gemini’s monthly users to over 65 million, while AI Overviews attract approximately 200 million monthly users. Google believes combining these experiences will make Gemini even more popular among users.

Ravi Stein, Google Search’s VP of Product, wrote on X, “You don’t have to think about where or how to ask your question.” He explained that users will continue to receive AI Overviews as before, but can now ask follow-up questions in a conversational format directly from the same screen.

Stein added, “This brings us closer to our search vision—ask whatever you think, however complex, and get the answers you need directly.”
