A stir has been created in the Maharajpur Union of Gopalganj after seven members of the Union Parishad submitted an application to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Muksudpur Police Station declaring that they are quitting Awami League politics.

The members who resigned are:

  • Ward 1 member Md. Kabir Molya

  • Ward 2 member Md. Jahidul Islam

  • Ward 3 member Iman Ali

  • Ward 4 member Md. Sadiqur Rahman Sadeq

  • Ward 6 member Md. Mojibur Fakir

  • Reserved Ward 1, 2, and 3 member Rehana Akhter Lucky

  • Reserved Ward 7, 8, and 9 member Hena Akhter

A photo of the application has circulated widely on Facebook. However, the OC has denied receiving any such application.

The application, reportedly submitted on Monday, November 24, went viral on November 25.

In the application, they wrote:
“We, the undersigned elected members of Maharajpur Union Parishad, are informing you in writing that we are currently not involved in any activities of the Bangladesh Awami League Muksudpur branch, and we will not be involved in the future.”

Speaking to the local media, Md. Kabir Molya said:
“Awami League used to be a principled political party in the past, which is why we were involved in its politics. But in the current context of Bangladesh, Awami League is a banned party. Remaining associated with it may force us away from council activities, which could cause public suffering. So we applied to the OC informing him that we will no longer be involved with the party.”

Md. Jahidul Islam said:
“It was not appropriate to submit such an application directly to the OC. This should have been done through a proper procedure. We are discussing the matter among ourselves.”

However, OC Mostafa Kamal denied receiving any application:
“They visited the station, and when I asked about the local situation, they said everything was fine. But I have not received any application, nor do I know that they have resigned from Awami League.”
