The 16th Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad 2027 was held at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST), bringing together students from seven colleges to compete and deepen their interest in chemistry. The event began on Saturday, October 31, with a colourful procession, the national anthem, flag hoisting and an oath-taking ceremony. The top 10 participants received certificates and crests at the end of the competition.
Organised by the Chemistry Department of JUST under the initiative of the Bangladesh Chemical Society, the Olympiad was inaugurated by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Iarul Kabir. The inaugural programme took place at 9:30 am in front of the university’s Central Shaheed Minar. The formalities began with the national anthem and the hoisting of the national flag.
A procession then started from the university’s main gate, moved along the main road and concluded in front of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building.
The competition began at 10 am at the Professor Mohammad Sharif Hossain Gallery, with students from seven colleges taking part. At the conclusion, the top 10 students were awarded certificates and crests.
Addressing the participants as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Professor Iarul Kabir said, “Digital addiction has now become a serious problem. You must give up this mobile phone addiction and focus on your studies. Always dream big. With confidence and hard work, one of you may one day become a Nobel laureate.”
He added, “In competitions like the Olympiad, winning or losing is not the most important thing. What matters is participating with a genuine desire to learn. Develop a love for chemistry, enjoy your studies and prepare yourselves to become skilled chemists and responsible citizens of the country.”
Special guest Professor Dr Mohammad Faruk Hasan, Treasurer of JUST, said the main purpose of events such as the Chemistry Olympiad was to present complex textbook topics to students in a simpler and more engaging way.
“I hope that future globally renowned personalities and Nobel laureates, like Dr Muhammad Yunus, Amartya Sen or Abdus Salam, will emerge from among you,” he said.
He added, “As a parent and teacher, I believe the greatest joy and pride for parents and teachers come when their children and students surpass them through their own abilities and achieve much greater things. I hope you will one day achieve remarkable success internationally and bring honour to the country.”
The programme was chaired by Dr K. M. Anis-ul-Haque, Chairman of the Chemistry Department at JUST. Professor Dr Mohammad Hafiz Uddin, Dean of the Faculty of Science, also spoke at the event. Teachers from the Chemistry Department and participating colleges, along with guardians, attended the programme.
