- Digital data, courier logs, and software audit confirmed VAT evasion
- Legal proceedings and case filing currently underway by NBR
Enhancing e-commerce sales auditing, digital transaction monitoring, and tax compliance frameworks, the Customs, Excise, and VAT Commissionerate (Dhaka West) has uncovered a major tax evasion case involving Korean Mart Bangladesh. The online cosmetics retailer evaded BDT 3,19,57,490 in Value Added Tax (VAT) against total sales amounting to BDT 46,73,63,647. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) confirmed the matter in an official press release issued today, Wednesday (23 September).
According to NBR, acting on a tip-off, a preventive enforcement team conducted a drive on September 21 at the establishment under the jurisdiction of the Pallabi divisional office. Officials served the VAT 12.1 notice and inspected digital records, including laptops, computers, courier service logs, and internal enterprise software data.
Upon identifying initial discrepancies, authorities backed up essential digital evidence onto encrypted drives and seized relevant physical documents for thorough forensic evaluation. Subsequent audit of the digital ledger confirmed unrecorded transaction volumes and systematic revenue concealment.
NBR stated that formal legal proceedings to file a case against Korean Mart Bangladesh under the prevailing VAT and Supplementary Duty Act are currently in progress.
