Facebook and Instagram Hit by Brief Outage Across US
Facebook and Instagram, two of Meta’s most popular social media platforms, experienced a brief technical outage across the United States. Thousands of users faced difficulties accessing the services on Sunday (September 20) night local time. However, the services returned to normal shortly afterward, according to internet outage monitoring website Downdetector.
According to data from Downdetector, the technical issue began at around 8:55 p.m. US time. At the peak of the outage, more than 17,000 Facebook users and over 5,000 Instagram users reported problems. A large number of users said they were unable to access the websites or refresh their home feeds on the mobile apps.
However, within about an hour of the disruption, around 10 p.m., the number of reports dropped sharply. This indicated that services had been restored for most users relatively quickly.
Meta did not immediately issue any official statement or comment on the cause of the temporary outage. It is worth noting that Downdetector’s figures are primarily based on user-submitted reports, meaning the actual number of affected users may have been somewhat different.
According to technology analysts, temporary disruptions of this kind can occur due to complications involving network infrastructure and Meta’s servers. Facebook and Instagram experienced a similar technical outage in July, when several thousand users temporarily lost access to the platforms.
As the technology sector continues to expand, maintaining the reliability of social media services has become a major challenge for Meta.
