The Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Dhaka (West) has unearthed a Value Added Tax (VAT) evasion scheme amounting to BDT 3,28,23,053 by an entity registered as a lithium battery manufacturer. Operating from Nabagram in Dhamrai on the outskirts of Dhaka, the enterprise concealed extensive commercial procurement and distribution transactions to bypass statutory tax liabilities. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) disclosed the findings through an official press statement on Sunday, 20 September 2026.

According to NBR officials, an enforcement team conducted a targeted raid on 17 September at the manufacturing plant of Shinlian Electronics Technology Bangladesh Company Limited (BIN: 007545559-0404), acting on actionable intelligence under the direction of the Commissioner of VAT Dhaka (West).

While legally registered solely for lithium-ion battery production, inspection teams discovered assembled batteries and raw components alongside commercial inventories of imported mobile device chargers, wired earphones, and branded Bluetooth headsets prepped for retail dispatch. Detecting prima facie discrepancies between actual stock and registered filings, officials impounded commercial ledgers, production books, and invoices via standard VAT-12.3 seizure forms for statutory auditing.

Subsequent forensic review revealed that the company systematically concealed actual product sales worth BDT 14,56,18,507 from regulatory oversight, resulting in direct VAT evasion of BDT 1,89,85,892. Furthermore, unrecorded purchase entries for imported goods and raw components totaling BDT 15,22,08,775 accounted for an additional VAT default of BDT 1,38,37,161. Across both operational segments, cumulative evaded revenue totaled BDT 3,28,23,053.

The NBR stated that formal proceedings have been initiated under prevailing Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty legislation to recover the evaded public revenues and establish regulatory penalties against the enterprise.
