Ahead of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's upcoming visit to the United States for the 81st UN General Assembly (UNGA) session, Bangladeshi expatriates have raised strong demands to resume direct Biman Bangladesh Airlines flights on the Dhaka-New York route. Alongside flight resumption, expats have urged the government to end airport hassle, safeguard their assets in Bangladesh, and facilitate free repatriation of deceased overseas workers.
Expatriates expect the Prime Minister to announce a clear timeline and implementation plan for the direct flight during his tour. Biman last operated on this route on July 29, 2006, after its launch in 1993. Over the past two decades, various assurances were made, but the service remained suspended. Some expatriates have also advocated for direct connections between New York and Sylhet.
Beside aviation connectivity, non-resident Bangladeshis requested respectful treatment at immigration entry points upon arrival in Dhaka. They emphasized the need for legal safeguards to prevent illegal land grabbing and property encroachment targeting overseas families while they reside abroad.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to depart Dhaka for New York on September 21 and address the UN General Assembly on September 24. Expatriate community leaders hope that the Prime Minister will announce concrete initiatives addressing their longstanding issues during his presence in New York.
