SpaceX Sets September 28 Target for Starship Orbital Test Flight

Elon Musk’s private space exploration company SpaceX has set September 28 as the target date for the much-anticipated first orbital test flight of its mega rocket “Starship.” The new date was announced after a slight adjustment to the schedule while awaiting necessary administrative and regulatory approvals.

In this 14th test mission, the rocket will rise to an altitude of around 171 miles above the Earth’s surface and complete six orbits of the Earth over a 10-hour period. While all previous tests were suborbital, SpaceX considers this orbital mission a major milestone toward demonstrating the spacecraft’s overall reusability and preparing for its first commercial flights.

‘Starlink V3’ Satellites and a Leap in Speed

The most important aspect of the mission is the deployment of 26 next-generation “Starlink V3” internet satellites in space for commercial customer service for the first time. While previous tests carried satellites into space solely to demonstrate capabilities, this will be the first time they are deployed in orbit specifically to provide services directly to customers.

The V3 satellites will have a downlink capacity of 1 terabit per second, making them 10 times faster than the previous “V2” version. Their uplink speed will also reach 160 Gbps, nearly 22 times higher than that of the previous generation.

Landing Strategy and Live Broadcast

However, the flight will not feature the complex maneuver of using the launch tower’s mechanical arms to catch the rocket’s booster. A few minutes after liftoff, Starship’s “Super Heavy” booster will fall into the Gulf of Mexico.

Meanwhile, after completing its scheduled tasks in space, the main Starship spacecraft will land in the Pacific Ocean near the coast of Chile. SpaceX will livestream the entire launch process through its social media account on “X.”
