AI Cheating in Exam: Two DU Students Penalized

The Dhaka University administration has penalized two students from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism for resorting to unfair means using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools during examinations. The disciplined students are Fathun Karib Chowdhury (2023-24 session) and Md. Ferdaus. Karib is a member of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal, while Ferdaus is an elected executive member of the Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall Union from a Shibir-backed panel.

According to the decision of the DU Syndicate, Karib Chowdhury has been awarded an 'Exam+2' penalty, while Ferdaus received an 'Exam+1' penalty. Consequently, Karib's relevant exam stands canceled alongside a bar from participating in the next two exams. Similarly, Ferdaus's exam has been canceled with a prohibition from taking the next upcoming examination.

According to university sources, on June 11, Karib was caught using Google's AI service 'Gemini' on a mobile phone hidden between his legs during an ongoing exam. The invigilators found an exact match between his written answers and the Gemini search query history. Meanwhile, during the Course 107 retake exam, Ferdaus left the hall under the pretext of using the washroom and was caught attempting to solve exam questions using 'ChatGPT' on a senior student's smartphone in the corridor.

The final decision was taken during the Syndicate meeting presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor A B M Obaidul Islam on August 31, followed by an official notice signed by Acting Controller of Examinations Dr. Himadri Shekhar Chakraborty on September 7. The notice revealed that a total of 64 students from various departments, institutes, and affiliated colleges were penalized under 'Exam+1', 'Exam+2', and 'Exam+3' terms for various offenses, triggering fresh debates on tackling technology-driven cheating in academic halls.
