NINMAS Holds First Pediatric Nuclear Medicine Training

The National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS) at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has held its first-ever training programme on Pediatric Nuclear Medicine, highlighting advanced nuclear imaging technologies for diagnosing complex conditions in children. The programme also emphasized brain perfusion testing to assess cerebral blood flow and brain function.

The training programme and scientific seminar, titled “Inauguration of Training Programme on Pediatric Nuclear Medicine: Scintigraphy, SPECT-CT and Clinical Practice,” was held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Kamal Uddin Ahmed Auditorium of NINMAS. A total of 18 trainees from nuclear medicine, pediatrics and other departments participated.

Professor Dr. Nasrin Sultana delivered the keynote presentation. She highlighted the clinical importance of nuclear medicine in pediatric care, particularly HIDA scans for biliary atresia, DTPA and DMSA renal scans, Meckel’s scans for detecting gastrointestinal bleeding, and brain perfusion tests for assessing cerebral blood flow and brain function.

The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr. A. K. M. Fazlul Bari, Director of NINMAS and President of the Bangladesh Thyroid Society.

In his remarks, Professor Dr. A. K. M. Fazlul Bari said the training was the first NINMAS programme specifically focused on pediatric nuclear medicine as part of its regular professional training activities.

He described nuclear medicine as a multidisciplinary field that is important for patients and physicians across different branches of medicine. He stressed coordination among medical specialties to make healthcare more accessible to low-income people in Bangladesh.

He also noted that, alongside nuclear medicine technologies, ultrasonography, Doppler, elastography and PET-CT are playing important roles in diagnosis.

Professor Fazlul Bari further said that around 11,000 thyroid cancer patients are receiving regular treatment at the thyroid department of NINMAS.

Among others, Professor Dr. Md. Rokunuzzaman, Chairman of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition; Professor Dr. Helena Begum, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology; Professor Dr. Galma Jahan, Pediatric Nephrology; and Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammad Badrul Alam attended the programme.
