One Listed Person Found Alive, Two Died of Natural Causes
- Divisional Commissioner denies reports of six deaths in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital fire stampede
- One person on the casualty list was found alive; two others died of natural causes before arrival
- Ten Fire Service units brought the blaze under control within 30 minutes
Divisional Commissioner S M Humayun Kabir Sarkar has clarified that reports claiming six people died in a stampede following a fire at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) are incorrect. He provided the update while addressing reporters at the hospital at midnight on Monday (September 14).
The Divisional Commissioner stated that one individual listed among the reported deceased was found alive, while the families of two others confirmed they died of natural causes prior to entering the hospital. "While several people sustained injuries due to panic and overcrowding, no deaths occurred as a result of a stampede. The Fire Service has also verified this," he explained.
The incident occurred at around 6:00 PM on Monday when a fire broke out, causing dense smoke to spread across multiple floors and triggering panic among patients and visitors.
Fire Service officials reported that ten units from five stations responded to the emergency and successfully controlled the blaze by 6:30 PM. Preliminary assessments suggest an electrical short circuit in an elevator shaft may have triggered the fire, though a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause. //DBTech/MRS/MIST//
