OpenAI Acquires Camera Startup Glass Imaging for $300 Million
OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a smartphone camera technology startup, in a deal worth more than $300 million. Founded in Los Altos, California, in 2019, the startup had previously raised around $30 million in funding from investors.
Using AI Technology at the Moment of Capture
Glass Imaging was co-founded by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop. During their time at Apple, they led the team that developed the iPhone’s popular Portrait Mode. Rather than editing photos after they are taken, the company’s neural-network system helps overcome the limitations of camera sensors and capture high-quality images the moment the shutter button is pressed.
OpenAI’s Hardware Ambitions
Although OpenAI has not officially commented on the acquisition, technology experts believe the move is aimed at developing its own smartphones, earbuds and AI-powered devices.
Earlier, in 2025, OpenAI acquired renowned designer Jony Ive’s startup io for $6.5 billion, signaling a major expansion of its ambitions in the hardware sector.
