US President Donald Trump has rejected calls to rein in artificial intelligence (AI) technology or slow its development, describing AI critics as an “extremely negative force.”

Speaking to reporters at his golf course in Doonbeg, Ireland, Trump made it clear that he wants to ensure the United States maintains its global leadership in AI at any cost.

Emphasizing the importance of maintaining US dominance over China, Trump said, “Those who win in AI will ultimately be the ultimate winners on the world stage.” He added that necessary guidelines or “guardrails” could certainly be put in place to ensure safety, but some negative groups are raising unrealistic and imaginary fears about things that will never actually happen.

Extreme Warnings of Danger and Efforts to Rein in the Technology

Trump’s strong remarks came at a time when debate over the potential extreme risks of AI has intensified in the United States. Recently, two senior researchers at AI research company Anthropic warned that if the technology continues to advance at an uncontrolled pace, it could soon become a threat to the very existence of humanity.

Researcher Jacob Coxon, who resigned amid these concerns, called for international coordination, warning that entering an accelerated AI race without safety guardrails in the name of competing with China would be extremely dangerous.

Against this backdrop, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed a three-part roadmap to slow the pace of AI development somewhat and create time for risk management. Elon Musk of xAI and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have also expressed support for the proposal.

Political Impact and Geopolitical Challenges

Since the beginning of Trump’s second term in office, his administration has pursued technology-friendly policies toward AI companies, while leading executives in the industry have also supported his approach. As the November 3 midterm elections approach, technology-sector entrepreneurs are investing large sums in campaigns for Republican candidates. Elon Musk’s “America PAC” is playing a major role in mobilizing voters at the grassroots level.

However, amid the political and military rivalry between China and the United States, questions remain over how feasible it would be to establish a specific “speed limit” for global AI development.

According to technology analysts, the biggest global challenge now is ensuring with complete certainty that rival countries cannot exploit regulatory gaps to gain a military advantage.
