In recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions to fisheries research, Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam Sardar, former Dean and Professor of the Department of Fisheries Biology and Genetics at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), has been awarded the 'National Fisheries Award 2026 (Gold Medal)'. He confirmed the achievement on Wednesday (August 19) night.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman handed over the gold medal and honorary certificate to Dr. Rafiqul Islam Sardar during the inauguration ceremony of National Fisheries Week, jointly organized by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the Department of Fisheries in Katiadi, Kishoreganj.

Explaining his scientific research, Professor Rafiqul Islam Sardar stated, "My research focuses on fish sperm preservation, technically known as cryopreservation. Through this technology, preserved sperm is later used to fertilize fish eggs, producing high-quality fingerlings that eventually grow into superior broodstock."

He highlighted that similar to livestock breeding, applying cryopreservation technology in aquaculture significantly enhances the country's fish production capacity and preserves genetics.

A total of 13 categories recognized various farmers, entrepreneurs, and scientists during the National Fisheries Week event. Professor Rafiqul was honored in the researcher category, noting that this national recognition will further motivate his future scientific endeavors.
