Beijing’s E-Town Aims to Become Global AI Hub by 2030

8 August, Saturday: The Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, prominently known as 'E-Town', has announced its goal to establish itself as a premier global AI hub by 2030 by building a comprehensive AI-driven ecosystem. Through this initiative, the technology zone aims to achieve a total output value of 200 billion yuan (approximately $29.6 billion USD) solely from its core AI sector.

Kong Lei, Secretary of the Communist Party of China's Development Zone Committee, highlighted that the goal extends beyond company formation. Through the 'AI+' initiative, the region plans to integrate AI across diverse industries, urban management, and infrastructure. He noted, "In the AI era, competition goes beyond a single technology. It encompasses fundamental capabilities, key hardware, essential software, core data assets, application-driven ecosystems, and governance."

Despite occupying only 1.37 percent of Beijing’s total land area, E-Town’s GDP reached 401.2 billion yuan in 2025—accounting for nearly 40 percent of the capital's total industrial value-added output. Boasting an average annual growth rate of 12.1 percent, the zone is integrating AI with quantum science, 6G communications, and aerospace tech as part of its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030).

Semiconductors remain a central focus, with progress spanning chip design, manufacturing, packaging, testing, computing power, and industrial AI chips. To lay the foundation for future AI infrastructure, E-Town is building a massive intelligent computing cluster with a capacity of 100,000 Petaflops.

To showcase breakthroughs in robotics and intelligent transport, E-Town is scheduled to host the 'World Robot Conference' in mid-August, followed by the 'World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference' in October.
