Meta Moves: Facebook Removes External Like and Share Buttons
From next year, Facebook’s Like and Share buttons will no longer be available on third-party websites. Meta announced that these two social connection features, also known as social plugins, will be discontinued from February 10, 2026. The news was reported by Engadget.
In a company blog post, Meta stated that website administrators do not need to take any separate action regarding this change. However, if they wish, they can remove the buttons ahead of the scheduled date. After the specified date, the buttons will no longer be visible.
Launched in 2010, these buttons once played a crucial role in driving traffic to websites. They were extremely popular for sharing news and content across social media platforms.
According to Meta, these plugins represent “a reflection of the early era of web development,” and their usage has declined over time. Currently, Facebook’s influence in Meta’s business has also diminished compared to earlier years. Therefore, the retirement of these buttons is seen as a natural progression aligned with changing times.
