Microsoft Eases Forced Updates in Windows 11

Microsoft has announced a relaxation of its “forced update” policy for Windows 11 users, offering relief from the inconvenience of sudden system restarts caused by updates during important meetings or online gaming sessions. Users will now be able to pause Windows updates indefinitely if they choose.

How the new feature will work

According to Microsoft’s blog, users can now pause updates for up to 35 days through the Windows 11 settings. The key change is that once the 35-day period expires, users can extend it again. This process can be repeated as many times as desired, effectively allowing users to defer updates indefinitely. In other words, Windows will no longer force users to install updates unless they choose to do so.

Greater flexibility in restart and shutdown

In addition to pausing updates, Microsoft has introduced several other important changes:

  • Restart without updates: Previously, when updates were pending, users were often required to select the “Update and Restart” option. Now, users can choose to restart or shut down their devices without installing updates.
  • Flexibility during setup: During the setup of new devices, users will now have the option to skip the update step if they wish.

Why this change?

Microsoft representative Aria Hanson said that users had long complained about updates interrupting their work at inconvenient times. The lack of control over updates—especially during critical tasks—was a major source of frustration. These changes have been introduced in response to that feedback.

Caution and availability

While giving users full control, Microsoft has also issued a warning. Most Windows updates are designed to ensure device security and fix bugs. Therefore, delaying updates for extended periods may expose systems to cybersecurity risks.

Currently, the feature has not been rolled out to all users. It is available for testing among participants in the Windows Insider Program, specifically those in the “Dev” and “Experimental” channels. If everything proceeds as planned, it will soon be released for general users.
