Approval Granted for 55MW Solar Power Plant & Energy Scope Integration
Bridge Authority Adopts Solar Masterplan
- Bangladesh Bridge Authority approves inclusion of solar panels in its scope and endorses a comprehensive Masterplan
- 120 acres at Jamuna Bridge site leased for a 55MW solar power generation plant
- Decision taken to set up Center for Bridge Research and Training (CBRT) alongside flat policy revisions
In a major drive toward adopting clean energy technologies, the Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) has officially expanded its working scope to incorporate solar panel installations and approved the formulation of a dedicated masterplan. The decisions were finalized today during the 117th Board Meeting of the BBA, held at 01:30 PM at the Setu Bhaban conference room.
Sheikh Robiul Alam, MP, Honorable Minister for Road Transport and Bridges and Chairman of the BBA Board, presided over the meeting. Board members participated both in person and virtually via Zoom. At the onset, Secretary of the Bridges Division and Executive Director of BBA, Md. Abdur Rouf, presented the agenda and implementation progress via a multimedia presentation.
Solar Power Integration and 120-Acre Land Lease
Aligning with the government's green growth initiatives, the board approved a proposal to lease 120 acres of land at the Jamuna Bridge site to North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL). The site will host a 55-megawatt (MW) solar power plant featuring modern photovoltaic technology. The newly approved Masterplan will guide the systematic deployment of solar technologies across BBA-managed lands and structures.
CBRT for Advanced Engineering Research
To elevate technical expertise and research standards, the board resolved to establish the 'Center for Bridge Research and Training' (CBRT). The center will focus on professional skill development, structural integrity research, and modern engineering practices for megastructures.
Rehabilitation and Administrative Revisions
The board approved amendments to the flat allotment policies in the rehabilitation village for families affected by the Dhaka Elevated Expressway project. Additionally, the contract for operating the BIAM Laboratory School at Diabari, Uttara was reinstated, and welfare rules were updated to rephrase "Annual Scholarship" as "Annual Educational Assistance Grant."
In his closing remarks, Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam, MP, emphasized building a sustainable, tech-enabled transportation and infrastructure ecosystem, directing officials to ensure transparent and prompt execution of all decisions.
