Bangladesh is planning to acquire 20 Chinese-made 4.5-generation J-10CE multirole fighter jets to enhance its air force capabilities, impacting the regional military balance.
Bangladesh is planning to procure 20 Chinese-made J-10CE multirole fighter jets to significantly enhance the capabilities of the Bangladesh Air Force. According to a report by Defence Security Asia, the proposed package, valued at approximately USD 2.2 billion, includes the aircraft along with logistics assistance, training, maintenance, and long-term support. If finalized, these fighter jets are expected to be delivered in phases between 2026 and 2027.
The Chengdu J-10C is a 4.5-generation multirole fighter equipped with advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, network-centric combat systems, and long-range air-to-air missile capabilities.
This potential agreement has sparked fresh geopolitical tensions and could alter the military balance across South Asia. The development has caused unease within Indian security circles, particularly regarding the sensitive Siliguri Corridor (Chicken's Neck). This 20-22 km wide corridor, which connects mainland India with its northeastern states, lies geographically close to the northern borders of Bangladesh's Rangpur and Dinajpur regions.
The report notes that following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, a new alignment in Bangladesh's defense policy is emerging under the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Defense analysts suggest that China's growing military and infrastructure investments align with its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), creating a broader sphere of influence. Consequently, India is unlikely to view this strictly as a routine sovereign defense procurement, potentially complicating regional security dynamics.
