UGC Plans Stronger Industry-Academia Links to Boost Employability
The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) is set to promote apprenticeships, internships, and stronger industry-academia collaboration to make higher education more practical and employment-oriented, according to UGC Member Abdullah-Al-Mamun.
He said the initiative will be implemented by establishing effective partnerships between universities located in divisional cities and local industries and business organizations. Such collaboration will enable students to gain hands-on training and real-world experience, helping them transition more smoothly into professional careers.
Dr. Abdullah-Al-Mamun made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an open discussion titled “Education-Industry Synergy: A Solution to Employment Challenges” held at Pabna University of Science and Technology on Thursday.
The discussion was chaired by the university’s Vice-Chancellor Abul Hasnat Md. Shamim. Special guest at the event was Md. AKM Matinur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University.
Dr. Abdullah-Al-Mamun emphasized that the government is placing significant importance on innovation, research, and the development of skilled human resources. He noted that achieving these goals requires effective partnerships between universities and industries.
He also encouraged students to focus on skill development, research-oriented thinking, and the pursuit of new knowledge.
Highlighting the need to address social and geographical disparities in education, he stated that quality education should not remain the privilege of any particular social group. According to him, equal access to quality education must be ensured for all citizens regardless of economic background.
He added that the UGC will continue working to expand educational opportunities in underdeveloped regions and create an environment that helps uncover and nurture hidden talent.
In his presidential remarks, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abul Hasnat Md. Shamim said that coordinated efforts to bridge the gap between academia and industry can play a vital role in developing a skilled workforce.
He noted that expanding practical and industry-oriented education is one of the most effective ways to address unemployment challenges.
Representatives from public and private industries, university faculty members, and students participated in the event and exchanged views on strengthening cooperation between the education and industrial sectors to enhance employment opportunities.
