Threads Tests Live Chat Tech to Tackle X in Real-Time Talks

The social media platform Threads, owned by Meta Platforms, has announced the launch of a “Live Chat” feature as part of a major update to its app. The move is primarily aimed at enabling real-time discussions among users during major cultural or sporting events. Through this initiative, Threads is now preparing to compete directly with X, owned by Elon Musk.

According to Threads authorities, the feature has initially been launched on a trial basis for the NBA community during playoff games. Popular personalities such as Malika Andrews and Rachel Nichols will host these live chats. At present, only selected content creators can initiate chats, while general users are not yet able to host them. However, Meta plans to roll out the feature globally for all users soon.

Reports state that a maximum of 150 participants will be able to actively engage in a single live chat. Participants will be able to send text messages, images, videos, links, and emoji reactions.

If the number of participants exceeds 150, additional users will be able to join in “spectator” mode, where they can watch discussions and take part in polls. Users can join these chats through the community section at the top of their feed or by noticing a red live ring around the host’s profile picture.

Although Threads initially lagged behind in real-time news updates, it recently introduced search and hashtag features. Now, with the addition of the Live Chat feature, it aims to challenge X more directly. In the future, the platform is expected to include features such as co-hosting, lock-screen widgets, and live score updates.

To prevent inappropriate messages, moderation powers will be available both through artificial intelligence and directly in the hands of chat hosts. Experts believe the feature could gain significant popularity during major global events such as the FIFA World Cup or the Academy Awards.
