CUET Celebrates International Pi Day 2025
A special seminar marking International Mathematics (Pi) Day 2025 was held at Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET). The event featured a poster exhibition and a quiz competition, alongside the seminar. The session took place on Thursday afternoon at the Simulation Lab of the university’s Mathematics Department, where PhD student Rajib Karmakar presented the keynote paper.
Organized by the Department of Mathematics, the event was graced by Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, Vice-Chancellor of CUET, as the chief guest. Professor Dr. A.H. Rashedul Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, attended as the special guest. The seminar was presided over by Professor Dr. Mohammad Shah Alam, Head of the Mathematics Department, while the welcome speech was delivered by Professor Dr. Ujjal Kumar Dev, Moderator of CUET Math Club and faculty member of the Mathematics Department. The event was moderated by Assistant Professor Selim Hossain of the Mathematics Department.
In his speech, CUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan highlighted the significance of mathematics in modern science and technology, stating, "We are living in an era of science and information technology, and mathematics is considered the language of science. To build a successful life and a prosperous nation, the application of science and technology is indispensable. It is mathematics that has driven technological advancements to this extent. Without mathematics, we would not be able to explore historical events or make groundbreaking scientific discoveries. Mathematics plays a crucial role in scientific progress. Without its development, neither science nor technology can advance. The vast expansion of science is centered around mathematics. To keep pace with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we must cultivate interest in mathematics and overcome the fear of it."
Following the speeches, awards were distributed among the winners. Chaiti Devi Pia, an MSc student of the Mathematics Department, was awarded for the best poster, while the Pi Day Quiz winners were also recognized. Nahid Hasan from the CSE Department secured the first position, Abrar Ahnaf Karim from the EEE Department came second, and Palash Chandra Dev from the Mechanical Engineering Department placed third. The awards were presented by CUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan.
