Allegation of tax evasion worth Tk 58 lakh against NSTU Registrar
The newly released Registrar of Noakhali Science and Technology University Md. Jasim Uddin's unexplained income is 2 crore 35 lakh 68 thousand 303 taka. In the last two fiscal years, a total of 57 lakh 99 thousand 733 taka tax evasion charges were found against him. It has been alleged that he earned this money through various recruitment trades without mentioning the source of his income.
According to the data of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), his unexplained income in the fiscal year 2022-23 was Tk 1 crore 59 lakh 5 thousand 167 and according to the data of the fiscal year 2023-24 the unexplained income was Tk 76 lakh 63 thousand 136. It has been alleged that tax evasion has been organized beyond the declared income deposited in his bank.
According to the accounts of the accused registrar for the tax year 2022-23, apart from his own deposit, salary, bonus honorarium, TA/DA, remittance loan, 89 lakh 5 thousand 537 taka from other banks and 27 lakh 172 taka from other persons are deposited in the bank. Unexplained income is 1 crore 59 lakh 5 thousand 167 taka.
Besides, according to the calculation of 2023-24 tax year, apart from his own deposit, salary, bonus honorarium, TA/DA, remittance loan, 49 lakh 49 thousand 500 taka from other banks and 11 lakh 84 thousand 900 taka from other people are deposited in his bank account. His unexplained income is 76 lakh 63 thousand 134 taka.
His total unexplained income in these two tax years was 2 crore 35 lakh 68 thousand 303 taka. Where his total (39,28,456 + 18,71,277) 57 lakh 99 thousand 733 taka tax evasion complaint is found.
Meanwhile, in addition to the complaint of earning through the recruitment trade, Jasim Uddin was illegally appointed as deputy registrar in NSTU with false information. He got this job in 2012 with eight years of experience where 10 years of experience was required to get appointed as deputy registrar. It is alleged that this matter was covered up with huge amount of money in the subsequent audit objection.
Recently, Hasibul Hossain, the coordinator of anti-discrimination student movement, NSTU, in a press conference, accused the incompetent registrar of corruption.
However, in a statement denying the allegations, Jasim Uddin said, 'I do all my banking transactions through an account of State-owned Agrani Bank. Apart from this I don't have any account in any other bank. The amount of money currently deposited in the said account of Agrani Bank is a little more than 4 lakh taka. Not just at present; At no time in the past was there 1 crore 73 lakh taka as said.
I am willing to show my bank statement to the coordinators if they wish. He also said, 'Even though the bank statement complaint is enough to prove the falsehood, I would like to say a couple of things about the recruitment trade complaint. I am appointed as Registrar of Noakhali University of Science and Technology on 28 November 2023. After the appointment to the said post, no significant recruitment activities were conducted in the university. However, I welcome any authority of the university or the state to investigate the allegations of recruitment trade raised by dear coordinators about me.'
