Tim Cook’s 15-Year Apple Legacy: From Doubts to Global Powerhouse
When Tim Cook succeeded Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011, there were widespread doubts in the technology world about his ability to lead the company. Although Cook lacked Jobs’ flair for magical product innovation or his vision for transforming society, his exceptional management and supply-chain expertise have helped turn Apple into a nearly $5 trillion global economic powerhouse.
After a successful 15-year tenure as CEO, Cook stepped down on September 1 and took over as executive chairman. During his tenure, Apple’s share price rose by nearly 2,000 percent.
While Steve Jobs built Apple into an iconic brand, Cook created one of the world’s most reliable and profitable commercial foundations.
Product Diversification and Ecosystem Expansion
Although Cook was unable to introduce another revolutionary device on the scale of the iPhone, he captured huge markets with wearable products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods. His greater achievement, however, was the extraordinary expansion of Apple’s services business around the iPhone, including Apple Music, iCloud and Apple Pay, which generated $109 billion in revenue last year alone.
Cook also faced criticism over the early confusion surrounding Apple Maps and the cancellation of the company’s self-driving car project after a decade of development. At the same time, he demonstrated far-reaching leadership in protecting customer privacy and navigating US tariff policies while maintaining diplomatic relations with the Trump administration.
Next Leadership and Future Direction
Leaving behind a massive $147 billion cash reserve and a stable business, Cook will now serve as Apple’s executive chairman. Meanwhile, veteran hardware executive John Ternus has taken over as Apple’s new CEO.
Recently appearing on stage to unveil Apple’s foldable phone, the ‘iPhone Duo’, Ternus made it clear that Apple will seek to reshape the world in new ways while building on the strong foundation created by his predecessor.
