Streaming platforms have become an integral part of everyday entertainment. Watching quality movies or favourite TV series can now mean spending a substantial amount of money every month. As subscription fees continue to pile up, many people may feel that good entertainment is impossible without paying. But that is not entirely true.

A closer look at the technology landscape reveals a vast range of completely free and legal entertainment options. From channel surfing like traditional cable TV to selecting movies from a personal watchlist, these free services offer a wide variety of viewing options.

Since these platforms provide content at no cost, viewers naturally have to put up with occasional advertisements. With a little smart use of a smart TV, however, free entertainment can become an excellent companion during leisure time.

Free Channels Built into Your TV

You do not have to look far to begin watching TV for free. Almost every smart TV currently on the market comes with certain free services pre-installed, commonly known as Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) platforms. Along with on-demand movies, these services offer a variety of channels that broadcast around the clock, much like traditional cable television.

Services such as LG Channels on LG TVs, Samsung TV Plus on Samsung devices and Google TV Freeplay are already integrated into their respective television platforms.

While these services may not offer the latest blockbuster movies or popular live sports broadcasts, they provide plenty of game shows, lifestyle programmes, cooking shows, news and movies across a range of genres.

Two Popular Ad-Supported Streaming Platforms

Those looking to expand beyond their TV’s built-in apps can download popular free services such as Tubi and Pluto TV from their app stores.

Tubi allows users to watch movies and dramas freely without paying a subscription fee—or even creating an account or signing up. Alongside its extensive movie library, the platform offers content across various categories as well as a diverse selection of Tubi Originals.

Pluto TV, meanwhile, is particularly known for its extensive collection of live channels. It offers an experience reminiscent of traditional cable television. Crime-series fans can find dedicated channels that continuously broadcast the same shows, while there are also channels featuring anime, local news and music.

World-Class Films with a Library Card

For people who have library memberships abroad, two services called Hoopla and Kanopy offer another excellent gateway to entertainment. Users can access these apps for free with valid library-card credentials from participating libraries.

Hoopla offers a wide selection of dramas, movies and comics from major broadcasters and content providers around the world. Kanopy, on the other hand, focuses less on mainstream commercial films and more on documentaries, non-fiction productions and independent and international cinema. Neither platform interrupts viewing with advertisements.

YouTube’s Official Free Movie Section

For many people, YouTube is synonymous with ordinary videos uploaded by users. However, the platform also offers a vast collection of official free movies through legitimate, copyright-compliant channels.

By going to the Movies & TV section from YouTube’s left-hand menu and selecting the Free category, users can access hundreds of movies and series at no cost. Official YouTube channels operated by major production houses also offer a wide range of free content.

From the Warner Bros. Classics channel to hugely popular cartoons from earlier eras and cult classic films, a variety of entertainment can be easily enjoyed through the YouTube app on a smart TV.

Amazon Prime and Sling Open New Possibilities

Users can also watch a substantial amount of free content through the Amazon Prime Video app without paying. Although such content was previously offered through a separate app, Amazon has now incorporated a large free-to-watch library directly into the Prime Video app.

Alongside paid and subscription-based content, the app features a dedicated free category offering both on-demand movies and live channels.

Another platform, Sling Freestream, designed along the lines of US cable television, allows users to watch various news and reality-TV channels without even creating an account. Creating a free account provides additional benefits, including the ability to record or DVR around 10 hours of favourite programmes.
