WhatsApp has officially introduced audio and video calling on its web version, ending the long wait for users who previously had to install a separate desktop application to make calls from a PC or laptop. With the latest update from Meta, users can now initiate one-to-one and group voice or video calls directly from their web browser without downloading any additional software.

Screen Sharing and Call Management from the Browser

The new Calls tab on WhatsApp Web allows users to view their previous call history and favorite contacts. Similar to the desktop and mobile applications, the web version now supports screen sharing, in-call reactions, and access to call history.

All calls made through the browser will remain protected by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption, ensuring that conversations remain private and secure.

    Seamless Switching Between Devices

In addition to web calling, Meta has introduced several improvements to the overall WhatsApp calling experience. One of the most notable features is the ability to transfer an ongoing call from one device to another without disconnecting.

For example, users who begin a call on their smartphone can seamlessly move it to a laptop or web browser upon arriving at home or the office, without ending the conversation.

Waiting Room and Enhanced Audio Quality

To improve security during online meetings, WhatsApp has introduced a Waiting Room feature. When creating a group call link, hosts can require participants to obtain approval before joining the call. This means that clicking the invitation link alone will not grant immediate access; participants will only be admitted after receiving the host's permission.

The platform has also introduced noise suppression technology to reduce unwanted background sounds, making conversations clearer in noisy environments. In addition, WhatsApp now delivers HD-quality video much earlier during video calls, improving the overall visual experience from the beginning of a conversation.

Meta also announced that the ability to place calls using a user's username, instead of a phone number, will be rolled out to all users in the near future.
