‘Mayar Jonjal’ to Stream on Chorki from September 24

After making the rounds at prestigious international film festivals and receiving critical acclaim in theatres, the much-discussed Bangladesh-India joint production ‘Mayar Jonjal’ is now set to make its OTT debut. Based on two popular short stories by acclaimed novelist Manik Bandopadhyay—‘Bishakta Prem’ and ‘Subala’—the film will begin streaming on the platform Chorki from September 24. Chorki officially announced the release on Monday night.
The feature film, made six years ago, was directed by acclaimed West Bengal filmmaker Indranil Roy Chowdhury. It was jointly produced by Bangladesh’s Views and Visions, led by Jasim Uddin, and India’s production company Flipbook. The two central roles are played by acclaimed Bangladeshi actress Opi Karim and popular Kolkata actor Ritwick Chakraborty.
‘Mayar Jonjal’ received a commercial theatrical release simultaneously in Bangladesh and India in 2023. However, the film had already earned significant international recognition well before its theatrical release. It was screened at major film festivals in China, Russia, Indonesia, Italy, India and the United States.
Among its achievements, the film won the Jury Award for Best Feature Film in the Encounter with Asian Cinema section of the Asiatica Film Festival in Rome, Italy. It also won Best Film at the Rainbow Film Festival in London, UK, and received the Best Screenplay award in the Asian Competition section of the Dhaka International Film Festival.
Reacting to the news of the film’s OTT release, actor Ritwick Chakraborty expressed his excitement on social media, praising actress Opi Karim for delivering an outstanding and highly commendable performance as his wife in the film.
The film also features a number of accomplished actors in important roles, including Sohel Mondal (Sohel Rana), Amit Saha and veteran Kolkata actor Paran Bandopadhyay. Recalling his experience of working with Sohel Mondal, Chakraborty said the two first met on the set of this film and had a wonderful experience working together.
