DSCC Plans to Turn Waste into Power, Gas and Fuel

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has undertaken a strategic technological initiative to produce electricity, gas, compost fertilizer, and diesel from solid waste by integrating modern waste management and recycling technologies.

On September 19, 2026 (Saturday), DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam disclosed the initiative while speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of the “Floating Market in Exchange for Waste” program, jointly organized by Bidyanondo Foundation and DSCC at Sowarighat on the Buriganga River. He expressed hope that the city corporation could move to the initial technological stage of electricity generation within a few months as part of its process of turning waste into resources.

Abdus Salam said waste should not be viewed simply as garbage but transformed into resources through technology-driven recycling. The main goal, he said, is to raise public awareness while ensuring the production of electricity, gas, and fuel through recycling plants. The initiative will also help collect plastic and polythene waste from the river and its banks to protect the Buriganga’s aquatic environment and ecosystem. DSCC plans to gradually expand the program to all 75 wards and implement a recycling pilot project in Kamrangirchar with support from the Bidyanondo Foundation. At the same time, initiatives will be taken to make the Buriganga, Dhaleshwari, Shitalakshya, Balu, and Turag rivers suitable for navigation.

Dhaka-7 lawmaker Hamidur Rahman, who spoke as a special guest, said involving impoverished riverside communities and providing essential goods in exchange for collected waste could increase environmental awareness while spreading the message of recycling technology. At the special waste collection market, plastic waste is weighed and people receive various food items, including rice, lentils, and cooking oil, in exchange.
