UGC Pushes Research Commercialization
Universities Must Become True Innovation Engines
- Experts prioritize transforming academic R&D pipelines into deployable economic capital
- UGC plans dedicated on-campus innovation hubs and strategic patent licensing facilitation
- Structured recommendations submitted to align university research with domestic industry hurdles
Transforming academic research into tangible industrial assets and intellectual property to turn universities into national 'innovation engines' anchored key policy discussions in Dhaka.
The strategic roadmap was formulated on Monday, September 14, during a high-level consultative session hosted at the Novo Theatre conference hall alongside the 'Bangladesh Innovation Fair 2026'. Presided over by University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, the dialogue brought together university administrators, policymakers, venture leaders, and industry executives.
Panelists asserted that channeling academic ingenuity into the national gross domestic product requires re-engineering faculty appraisal structures, deploying modern venture incubation centers, and directing R&D resources toward resolving concrete industrial problems domestically.
"The UGC is establishing operational frameworks to make universities catalysts for enterprise creation and high-tech market value," stated UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed. "The commission is planning joint research tracks, commercialization pathways, IP patent facilitation, and dedicated on-campus innovation centers across capable universities."
The session was moderated by Dr. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman of the Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh and Founder of Daffodil International University. In his opening remarks, Dr. Khan said, "Universities must drive national progress by converting scientific research into functional prototypes and sustainable socio-economic impact."
The consultative roundtable featured strategic inputs from Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority Director A. K. M. Amirul Islam, Startup Bangladesh Limited Managing Director and CEO Nurul Hai, Jahangirnagar University Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Professor Dr. Umme Salma Zohora, and Gazipur Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. G. K. M. Mustafizur Rahman. Insights generated from the session will be synthesized into an official policy paper for national ministries to guide innovation reforms.
