- Projects span nano-urea, smart sensors, drug delivery and hydrogen production
Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) has achieved the distinction of becoming the second champion at the national-level Bangladesh Innovation Fair 2026, earning recognition for five research-based innovations.
Five universities were declared champions in the competition, which brought together public and private universities from across Bangladesh. Gazipur Agricultural University secured the first position.
The winners were announced at the closing ceremony of the Innovation Fair at Novo Theatre in Dhaka on Monday, September 14. More than 78 public and private universities participated in this year’s fair, showcasing more than 150 innovations. JUST presented five of its innovations.
Five innovations put JUST in the spotlight
The university showcased nano-urea, smart sensors for agriculture and food security, nano-carrier drug technology, next-generation prebiotics and a technology for producing hydrogen directly from water.
Professor Dr Md Javed Hossain Khan of the Department of Chemical Engineering, who led the JUST research team and was involved in the nano-urea innovation, said the university had selected the five projects after an internal screening process.
“Each of our innovations attracted the attention of the judges because they are relevant to current needs. From preparation for the Innovation Fair to this achievement, the university administration provided us with comprehensive support. We are grateful to the administration for that. Together, we want to take the university further,” he said.
‘A major achievement for our researchers’
Congratulating the JUST research team, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Iarul Kabir described the achievement as a major milestone for the university.
“This is a very significant achievement for our university. It is an inspiration for all our researchers. We were very optimistic about our innovations, and the delegation also worked very hard. We want to continue this momentum and play a major role in the country’s research,” he said.
‘We do not want to keep them in laboratories’
JUST Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan said the competition was highly challenging because of the enthusiastic participation of 78 public and private universities.
“Through a rigorous selection process, we finally nominated the best five projects from among our innovations for the fair. Our exhibition booth received excellent interest and appreciation from policymakers as well as visitors,” he said.
Expressing satisfaction over JUST’s second-place finish, he said, “We are extremely happy that JUST secured second place. However, we do not want to limit this achievement to the fair or the laboratory. Our primary objective is to use these innovations for the welfare of ordinary people.”
He added, “With government patronage and the necessary support, we will be able to take these innovations to people across the country very soon.”
Research with a broader institutional ambition
JUST Treasurer Professor Dr Mohammad Faruk Hasan said the achievement was a matter of pride for the university.
“This achievement is a matter of great pride for our university. I congratulate the research team. We want to move forward together with all our students, teachers, officers and employees. With everyone’s cooperation, we want to take our university’s ranking further ahead,” he said.
The research delegation
The JUST delegation was led and guided by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Iarul Kabir, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan and Treasurer Professor Dr Mohammad Faruk Hasan.
The research delegation also included Professor Dr Md Javed Hossain Khan of the Department of Chemical Engineering; Professor Dr Kishore Majumder of the Department of Pharmacy; Professor Dr Selina Akter of the Department of Microbiology; Associate Professor Dr Md Aminul Islam of the Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering; Associate Professor Dr Md Rafiul Hasan of the Department of Chemical Engineering; and Associate Professor Dr Farhana Yasmin of the Department of English.
Students from different departments also joined the university’s delegation at the fair.
JUST’s second-place finish highlights the university’s growing research and innovation capacity, particularly in technologies addressing agricultural productivity, food security, healthcare, environmental sustainability and clean energy.
The recognition also reinforces a broader ambition: moving university research beyond laboratory demonstrations toward practical applications that can eventually serve people and industry.
