OpenAI Acquires Presentation Startup NextSlide

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence company, has officially announced the acquisition of a startup called NextSlide. The startup developed technology that could easily transform user prompts, simple notes and research papers into visually appealing and editable presentations. Following the acquisition, NextSlide’s employees are now working directly on the development of ChatGPT.

NextSlide founder Ahmed Bashir recently confirmed the deal in a message posted on the company’s website. He said their primary goal had been to make visual communication more accessible, allowing anyone to present their ideas clearly and effectively to others. Bashir said that after joining OpenAI, they would continue working toward the same goal.

According to him, they aim to develop AI products that help people create new things and turn their ideas into meaningful work.

Financial Details of the Deal Remain Unknown

Interestingly, OpenAI’s acquisition of the startup actually took place earlier this year. However, in a post on LinkedIn, a professional networking platform, Ahmed Bashir said the deal was being officially announced several months after the acquisition. Neither party has disclosed how much OpenAI paid to acquire NextSlide.

A History of Successful Ventures

This is not Ahmed Bashir’s first experience of building and selling a startup. He was previously a co-founder of another startup called Caper AI, which developed technology for smart shopping carts and automated checkout systems. In 2021, another company, Instacart, acquired Caper AI for a substantial amount. Now, Bashir’s second venture, NextSlide, has joined forces with a major company like OpenAI.

A New Horizon for ChatGPT

Technology experts believe the acquisition could enable ChatGPT to move beyond text and writing and become a powerful tool for creating presentations, competing with platforms such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides.

Currently, millions of professionals use chatbots to generate content and then move to separate software to create presentation slides. If slide-generation capabilities are integrated directly into ChatGPT, their workflow could become significantly faster. People familiar with the matter believe OpenAI is pursuing such initiatives not merely to develop text-based models, but also to gain greater control over users’ overall work experience.
