X Chat Comes Calling: Company Rolls Out Comprehensive Communication Upgrade

X has finally launched its long-awaited new messaging platform, “Chat,” replacing the previous Direct Message (DM) system with a more modern, app-based communication suite. The revamped platform incorporates voice and video calls, file sharing, message editing and deletion, end-to-end encryption, and even screenshot notifications, according to Engadget.

The features are currently being rolled out to iOS and web users, with an Android release expected soon. X has also confirmed that a voice-memo feature is under development to further expand user communication options.

The company had been teasing the advanced Chat features for several months. Previously, X offered a limited form of encrypted messaging, but the feature was suspended in May. The new system removes several earlier limitations. According to X’s Help Center, both group messages and media files will now receive end-to-end encryption. However, metadata—such as the identity of message recipients—will remain unencrypted.

X also cautioned that the platform does not protect users against man-in-the-middle attacks. This means that if encrypted conversations are compromised for any reason—whether through a malicious insider or due to legal obligations—neither the sender nor the recipient will be aware of the intrusion. The company added that a future update will introduce a feature allowing users to verify the authenticity of encrypted conversations.
