The Sylhet Divisional Committee of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) has filed a general diary (GD) with Jalalabad Police Station, alleging that a local organization obstructed emergency internet restoration work and demanded illegal payments from technicians. The association says the incident has left internet service personnel feeling severely insecure while carrying out repair operations.
According to the GD, an electrical short circuit sparked a fire on a utility pole in the Londoni Road residential area of Sylhet at approximately 1:00 a.m. on July 28, 2026. The fire damaged all fiber-optic cables in the area, resulting in a complete disruption of internet services.
The complaint states that at around 10:00 a.m. on July 29, an ISPAB team of technicians and workers arrived to carry out emergency link restoration and repair work. They were allegedly obstructed by Mr. Mintu, President of the local organization Agragami Tarun Sangha, and its General Secretary, Mr. Raju.
According to the allegations, the two individuals demanded payment before allowing fiber-optic cables to be installed or repaired in the area and reportedly made it clear that no work would be permitted unless the money was paid. The complaint further alleges that the technicians were threatened and intimidated during the incident.
As a result of the security concerns, the technicians reportedly refused to continue the restoration work, leaving customers, educational institutions, and business establishments across the affected area without internet access and causing significant disruption.
The GD was filed by Md. Mas-Udur Rahman on behalf of the ISPAB Sylhet Divisional Committee at Jalalabad Police Station (GD No. 1853, dated July 29, 2026).
In the complaint, ISPAB requested the authorities to ensure the safety of technicians working in the Londoni Road area, create an environment that would allow internet services to be restored promptly, and take the necessary administrative and legal action against those accused of unlawfully obstructing the repair work.
