New York bound SWISS International Air Lines Airbus A330 made an emergency landing at Bangor International Airport in Maine on Monday afternoon. The aircraft was carrying 208 passengers.

Flight LX-16 departed Zurich at 10:30 a.m. local time. Nearly six hours into its transatlantic journey, while cruising at 32,000 feet over Nova Scotia, smoke suddenly appeared in the forward business class section. The pilots immediately declared an emergency and requested diversion to the nearest airport.

A SWISS spokesperson confirmed that the source of the smoke remains unknown. Smoke inside an aircraft is considered one of the most serious situations in aviation, as hidden fires can quickly escalate into catastrophic events.

Data from FlightRadar24 shows the aircraft descended more than 22,000 feet in just 10 minutes. Within another 10 minutes, the plane landed safely at Bangor. Fire crews conducted thermal and visual inspections on the runway. Although preparations were made for an evacuation via emergency slides, it was ultimately not required.

After nearly an hour on the runway, the aircraft was moved to the terminal. SWISS confirmed all passengers and crew were safe. The airline stated: “Such circumstances can be unsettling for passengers, which is why we are committed to providing them with the best possible support and onward travel arrangements.”

The aircraft involved bears registration HB-JHK. Notably, the same plane was involved in an emergency evacuation at Delhi Airport on April 26 this year, when a left-hand engine failure during takeoff led to an aborted departure. Smoke was emitted from the brakes, and six passengers were injured during the evacuation, two suffering broken legs. The aircraft returned to service on June 4.
