Nature-Based Tech Push for Climate Resilience Across South Asia
South Asian experts have emphasized nature-based technologies and sustainable solutions to address climate change. They stated that modern, technology-driven nature-based solutions are now essential to reduce environmental risks and ensure food security.
The views were shared on Tuesday, 19 May, at a regional webinar organized by the SAARC Agricultural Centre, where researchers, academics, policymakers, experts, and students from SAARC member countries participated. The event was moderated by Dr. Raja Ullah Khan.
In the opening remarks, Dr. Md. Harunur Rashid said that strengthening regional cooperation in sustainable natural resource management is essential. He noted that nature-based solutions can play a significant role in enhancing climate stability, ensuring food and nutrition security, and maintaining environmental balance.
At the webinar, Dr. Rishiraj Dutta, Program Manager at Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, emphasized integrating nature-based solutions into national development strategies. He said these approaches can reduce disaster risks while also generating environmental and social benefits.
He highlighted successful examples from different parts of Asia and called for strong policy support and public engagement for effective implementation. Dr. Rishiraj Dutta said, “Nature-based solutions are no longer optional. They are essential for climate resilience and livelihood protection in South Asia.”
In another presentation, Dr. Fabio Masi, Technical Director of IRIDRA and Vice President of the Global Wetland Tech Association, presented low-cost technology-driven approaches for wastewater treatment and reuse. He explained circular economy models, constructed wetland technologies, and water recycling methods for building climate-resilient communities.
In the final phase of the webinar, participants exchanged views on the practical application of nature-based solutions in agriculture and environmental management.
In the closing remarks, Tanvir Ahmed Tarafdar praised the initiative of the SAARC Agricultural Centre. He reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening regional cooperation for sustainable and climate-resilient development.
