Minister Visits Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant

Fakir Mahbub Anam, Minister for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Science and Technology, has visited the country’s first nuclear power project, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. The visit took place on Sunday, 8 March, at the project site located in Ishwardi of Pabna.

During the inspection, the Prime Minister’s Adviser Rehan Asif Asad was present. At the time, the Project Director guided the Minister and the Adviser through various facilities of the project and briefed them in detail about the progress of the work.

Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam said that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will play a significant role in ensuring the country’s energy security. Once this technologically advanced power plant becomes operational, the country’s electricity generation capacity will increase substantially and sustainable energy management will be strengthened. He further said that the government is working to expand the use of modern technologies in the power and energy sectors and that relevant authorities have been instructed to complete the project swiftly while maintaining international safety standards.

Prime Minister’s Adviser Rehan Asif Asad said that it is natural for large engineering projects to face various technical challenges during implementation. These challenges must be addressed efficiently while advancing the project step by step. He added that through coordinated teamwork it will be possible to overcome risks and achieve the set goals, and that the government will ensure the necessary support.

At the time, Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology Md. Anowar Hossain said that the Rooppur project is a milestone initiative in Bangladesh’s energy sector. He expressed hope that, through the collective efforts of all concerned, electricity from this plant will be connected to the national grid within the stipulated timeframe.

Russia’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin, said that Russia is working as an important partner in Bangladesh’s technological advancement. The professionalism of Russian experts involved in constructing the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, along with the joint efforts of Bangladeshi engineers, is moving the project steadily toward success. He noted that once the plant’s first and second units become operational, the country’s energy security will be further strengthened and technological capacity will increase.

The Ambassador further stated that the project is a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s development journey and that it will eventually be operated fully under Bangladesh’s ownership.

Senior officials from the relevant ministries, representatives of the local administration, and officials associated with the project were also present during the visit.
