Bangladesh-China Boost Ties in Semiconductor and Optical Technology

Bangladesh and China are working to expand cooperation in the fields of semiconductors, optical technology, and higher education. To this end, two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between the Hubei Semiconductor Industry Association and the Bangladesh Semiconductor Industry Association at an event held in Dhaka on Sunday, August 24.
Under the agreements, the Hubei Semiconductor Association will assist Bangladesh in chip design and semiconductor production. The initiative is also expected to open avenues for broader technological collaboration between the two countries.
At the event, Wei Liu, Chairman of the Academic Committee of the School of Integrated Circuits at Wuhan University and Vice President of the Hubei Semiconductor Industry Association, highlighted the benefits of mutual cooperation.
He said, "Wuhan is known as the ‘Optical Valley of China.’ It is home to hundreds of optical communication and semiconductor companies, more than 60 universities, and around 1.3 million students, making the city a hub of innovation and talent."
Pointing out Bangladesh’s greatest strength, Wei Liu remarked, "Bangladesh has a vast human resource, which is a huge advantage. In China, semiconductor-related jobs are highly competitive. Therefore, beyond technology exchange, there will be ample opportunities for engineer training and academic collaboration."
He further noted that Hubei is one of China’s most advanced regions in the semiconductor sector. "Hubei is very rich in semiconductor industry. Our association has more than 500 members. We want to bring some of them to Bangladesh to explore opportunities for joint ventures and training projects," he said.
Wei Liu also emphasized the potential for academic partnerships. "As a professor at Wuhan University, I believe there is great scope for collaboration between Chinese and Bangladeshi universities. We want to work on joint research, student exchanges, and academic cooperation," he added.
M. A. Jabbar, Managing Director of DBL Group and Chairman of the Bangladesh Semiconductor Industry Association, stated that closer cooperation with China would accelerate Bangladesh’s path toward rapid technological and industrial development.
He said, "Today’s MoU signing is an important milestone. It will open new doors of collaboration in business, education, and technology between Bangladesh and China."
