An open citizen information platform has been launched in Bangladesh to transparently document and present incidents of extortion to the public. The digital platform, named ‘ChandaWatch,’ is a community-based virtual open reporting system where anyone can submit information about extortion occurring in their area.

Through a smartphone or personal computer, users can access the platform to learn who is allegedly involved in extortion and where such incidents are taking place across the country. The web application includes a location-based map system, options to specify the amount of money demanded, features to mark reports as “verified” or “false,” and the ability to add new information regarding extortion incidents.

The platform is not affiliated with any government or private institution. It is an entirely independent citizen initiative. It presents information about where extortion is reportedly occurring across the country, how much money is being demanded, and whether such demands are considered lawful or unlawful.

The website was developed by a young software developer named Rehanuz Zaman with the aim of monitoring extortion activities. After completing his graduation from Daffodil International University, he previously launched a technology-based suicide prevention initiative called ‘Mindy Bangladesh.’

On the newly developed platform, any individual can anonymously submit a report by placing a pin on the map and providing details such as the date, time, amount of money demanded, and a description of the incident. Initially, each report remains under review. After administrative moderation, it is published on the public map.

Other users can then vote on whether the published report is confirmed or disputed. If it receives sufficient confirmation, the report is marked as verified.

Businesspeople and ordinary citizens in Bangladesh have long complained about extortion in various areas. However, in most cases, such incidents do not come to light due to a lack of evidence or documented information. ‘ChandaWatch’ aims to shed light on these hidden issues. As young people involved in the initiative describe it, “Where there is fear, transparency is necessary.”
