JUST’s Founding Vice-Chancellor Prof Rafiqul Islam Laid to Rest in Dhaka

The burial of Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam, the first Vice-Chancellor of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST), was completed on Friday, December 26. Following his final funeral prayer after Juma at Pallabi Jame Mosque, he was laid to rest at the Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in Mirpur, Dhaka.

Earlier the same day, a doa mahfil was held after Juma prayers at the central Jame Mosque of Jashore University of Science and Technology to pray for the eternal peace of the departed soul. Speakers at the programme included JUST Treasurer Professor Dr Hossein Al Mamun, Sylhet Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Treasurer Professor Dr Ismail Hossain, Colonel Meher Mahabbat Hossain, Executive Editor of online news portal Dhaka Mail Harun Jamil, and Professor Dr Fayzul Haque, among others. Local dignitaries were also present.

Professor Rafiqul Islam passed away on Wednesday after suddenly falling ill while on his way from his residence in Mirpur to the Krishibid Group office. He was taken to the nearby Al Helal Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

A faculty member of Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh, Professor Rafiqul Islam was appointed as the first Project Director and Vice-Chancellor of JUST following the university’s establishment. Born in Matlab, Chandpur, he completed his studies at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and pursued higher education in London and Australia.
