A three-day international educational conference titled Bangladesh Model United Nations (BMUN) 2025 began on December 26 at the campus of American International University–Bangladesh (AIUB), with the theme “Just Energy Transition.” The conference was inaugurated by Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam.

Speakers at the opening session emphasized that, in today’s global context, diplomacy cannot remain confined to technical or policy-driven solutions alone. Issues of justice, humanitarian responsibility, and ethical transparency are deeply intertwined with diplomatic efforts. Against the backdrop of climate change, global inequality, and political instability, the experiences of vulnerable countries like Bangladesh were highlighted as particularly significant.

In his address, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam described Bangladesh Model United Nations as an important platform for young people to understand the complexities of real-world diplomacy. “A just energy transition is not merely about shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy,” he said. “It is also about people’s lives, equity, and shared responsibility.” He further noted that a one-size-fits-all solution does not work for all countries and stressed that diplomacy is not about competition, but about reaching solutions through dialogue.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr Syed Md Shaikh Imtiaz, Professor at the Department of Women and Gender Studies, University of Dhaka, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB). He remarked that Model United Nations is not just about debate, but about learning to understand differing viewpoints. Addressing the youth, he urged participants to reflect on what kind of Bangladesh they envision over the next 25 years.

The session was chaired by Dr Gazi Md Saifuzzaman, Director General of the Department of Youth Development. He said that harnessing the potential of the country’s large youth population requires bridging education, skill development, and practical thinking—an area where initiatives like BMUN can play a vital role.

Special guests at the event included Md Masud Razzak, Publisher of The Times of Bangladesh; Dr Toufique Joarder, Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore and former President of UNYSAB; and Dr Syed Muntasir Mamun, Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They highlighted the importance of active youth participation, the real role of the United Nations, and the need for justice-based global policies.

Over the three days, discussions will be held in multiple phases across eight groups, culminating in a collective resolution on the final day of the conference.

Bangladesh Model United Nations 2025 is being organized by the United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB), with The Times of Bangladesh serving as the media partner.
