DUET’s Dynamic Day: English Language Festival Marks Silver Jubilee

A daylong celebration filled with vibrant activities took place on the campus of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Gazipur, as the DUET English Language Festival was held to mark the Silver Jubilee of the English Language Club (ELC). The colourful festival was hosted on Saturday, 15 November.

The inaugural programme commenced at 8:00 am in front of the old academic building, where guests were warmly received. This was followed by the opening session at 8:30 am at the Shaheed Shakil Parvez Auditorium, and a captivating grand rally on the campus street at 9:00 am, which infused the entire campus with festive spirit.

The opening ceremony was attended by DUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Zainal Abedin, deans of various faculties, departmental heads, and other distinguished guests. Delivering his speech as the chief guest, the Vice-Chancellor stated, “Alongside academic excellence, the practice of English is crucial for fostering creativity, communication skills, leadership qualities, and a global outlook among students. In higher education, research, technology, and professional fields, English is now indispensable. The ELC has been playing a commendable role in enhancing English proficiency among DUET students.”

At 9:30 am, the main competition—English Olympiad—began at the Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam Academic Building (SSNIAB), while a poster exhibition was held outdoors beside the auditorium. At 10:45 am, the students’ self-produced Cinematography Showcase was screened in the auditorium courtyard. This was followed by an important seminar on “Career Guidance” from 11:15 am to 1:00 pm, where speakers elaborated on the role of English in higher education and professional development.

After a lunch break from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, another seminar titled “Study Abroad: Road to USA” was held at 2:00 pm in the auditorium. The session detailed the processes of pursuing higher education in the United States, scholarship opportunities, and visa procedures.

In the afternoon, awards were presented to the winners of the Olympiad. Speaking on the occasion, Ronny Islam Mithu, President of the English Language Club, said, “The primary goal of this festival is to enhance students’ English proficiency, cultivate creativity, and provide exposure to international-standard activities.”
