Contraband Crackdown: Costly Cargo Including Mobile Sets Seized at Chattogram Airport

Authorities at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram have seized 30 mobile phones worth BDT 4 million and 570 cartons of foreign cigarettes valued at BDT 1.995 million from three inbound passengers.

The items were recovered from passengers arriving on US-Bangla Airlines flight BS 344 from Dubai on Friday, July 18. The passengers have been identified as Mohammad Shah Alam and Md. Arfan from Hathazari, and Ashraful Islam from Jorarganj.

According to Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, Public Relations Officer at Shah Amanat International Airport, "The National Security Intelligence (NSI) team stationed at the airport stopped the three passengers around 9:30 PM while they were attempting to pass through the green channel after clearing immigration and collecting their baggage."

He added, "As the cigarettes are considered prohibited import items, they were confiscated. The mobile phones were seized under the Baggage Rules for exceeding the allowable limit. These individuals have a history of frequently carrying items categorized under baggage party."

The passengers were penalized and their passport numbers were officially recorded. "They have been warned that future incidents of this nature will result in legal action," Khalil stated.
