Court Grants Four-Day Remand for Former ICT Minister Palak

A Dhaka court has granted a fresh four-day remand for former State Minister for ICT, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, in a case filed at Jatrabari Police Station related to the anti-discrimination student movement. Following the hearing, Palak, standing in the courtroom dock, extended Eid greetings to those present.
On Monday, March 24, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate G.M. Farhan Ishtiaq approved the remand after a hearing.
Palak was brought before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court (CMM), Dhaka, at 10:00 AM. The investigating officer of the case sought a seven-day remand, which was supported by Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki. In response, defense lawyers Advocate Farzana Yasmin Rakhi and Advocate Tariqul Islam argued against the remand and requested its cancellation. After hearing both sides, the court approved a four-day remand.
According to case details, Obaidul Islam, a participant in the anti-discrimination student movement, died on August 5 following an attack allegedly carried out by police and Awami League supporters near the Mayor Hanif Flyover in Jatrabari. Subsequently, a murder case was filed at Jatrabari Police Station.
On August 14, Palak was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) police while in hiding in the Nikunja residential area under Khilkhet Police Station. Since then, he has been placed on remand multiple times in various cases. He is currently being held at the Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur.
