Two students from Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) have secured first and eighth places in the Chattogram regional round of the 17th Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad, organised jointly by the Bangladesh Mathematical Society and the A F Mujibur Rahman Foundation.

Owaz Kuruni Jihad, a student of the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MME) department from the 2023–24 academic session, secured first place. Ishrat Jahan, a student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department from the 2024–25 academic session, finished eighth.

The competition was held simultaneously in eight regions across the country, including Chattogram, on Friday (6 November). At the regional round hosted by Premier University in Chattogram, 126 contestants from 20 universities competed. Ten participants were selected as winners.

Besides the two CUET students, the winners included four students from Noakhali Science and Technology University, one from Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and two from the University of Chittagong.

Sharing his reaction, first-place winner Owaz Kuruni Jihad said, “I have always wanted to work with mathematics. That aspiration has brought me this far. All the credit for reaching this position goes to my teachers and friends. I will try my best to prepare for the next round. More than the result, my main goal is to learn something new.”

Ishrat Jahan, who secured eighth place, said, “It was my first time participating in such a competition, so the experience was entirely new. Honestly, I did not expect to secure eighth place. However, this result has boosted my confidence and inspired me to do even better in the future.”

Expressing pride in CUET’s achievement, Dr Ujjal Kumar Deb, moderator of the CUET Math Club and a professor in the Department of Mathematics, said, “It is truly a matter of pride that two CUET students have qualified for the national round among contestants from 20 universities in the Chattogram region. On behalf of the CUET Math Club, I congratulate them. We will provide both winners with all necessary support to prepare for the next stage so that their success continues at the national and international levels.”

The national final, featuring the regional winners, will be held in Dhaka on December 19. The top five winners of the national competition will have the opportunity to participate in an international competition in Budapest, Hungary.
